Sept 19th

As Croxton continues his pursuit of Govan, he encounters Cheatham’s Confederate division near the Winfrey House.  Like Thomas, Braxton Bragg, the commander of the Confederate Army of the Tennessee, has heard the fighting grow more and more intense on his right.  He decides to send Cheatham’s division to reinforce Forrest and Walker.  The division arrives and deploys just as Liddell is beginning his withdrawal.

At this point, Croxton’s men have been fighting for nearly five hours.  They lack the strength to combat Cheatham’s powerful division for any length of time.  When they run into Jackson’s brigade they begin a fighting withdrawal to the west.
