Major General Gordon Granger, commander of the three brigades of the Union Reserve Corps stationed at McAfee Church, has been hearing the sounds of combat to the south since 9:30 AM.  He has orders to support Thomas, but receives no message to march to the fight.  By 11 AM he can no longer wait.  He gives orders for the brigade commanded by Colonel Dan McCook to remain at the church, and marches “to the sound of the guns” with the two-brigade division under Brigadier General James Steedman.  The actual order of march is unknown.
