Kelly Field
Sept 20th

Colquitt’s brigade, advancing alone and with no idea of the terrain in front of them, runs into the Federal lines at an oblique angle.  The initial Union volleys inflict severe casualties, particularly on the 24th South Carolina stationed on the brigade left.  Colonel Colquitt is killed attempting to rally the regiment, and command falls to Lieutenant Colonel Leroy Napier of the 8th Georgia Battalion.
Walthall’s Brigade from Liddell’s Division is sent south to try and provide a link with Cleburne’s Division.
At the south end of Kelly Field, Deshler’s Brigade crests the ridge and is met by the same blistering fire that greeting the previous brigades.
On the Union side, Colonel Stanley withdraws his brigade from its exposed position.  Dick’s brigade moves into the woods west of the field.
