Colquitt’s brigade begins retreating from its one-sided encounter with the Union line.  Sensing an opportunity, the 1st Battalion and 2nd Battalions, 18th U.S. charge and drive the Confederate brigade away.  Ector and Wilson’s brigades move forward to cover the withdrawal.
To the north, Govan’s brigade is ordered to attack the Union lines, alone and unsupported.
In the woods west of Kelly Field, Stanley reforms his brigade, and Colonel Dick forms his brigade behind it in support.  Behind them, the brigade commanded by Colonel Barnes moves into Kelly Field.
Deshler's Brigade suffers heavily during their attack. General Deshler is killed early by a cannon shell. Command passes to Colonel Roger Mills of the consolidated 6th,10th Texas Infantry & 15th Texas Cavalry (dismounted) regiment. Mills orders the brigade to retire below the crest. He leaves a skirmish line at the crest to continue the fight with the Federals.
