Snodgrass Hill & Horseshoe Ridge
Sept 20th
The 78th Pennsylvania realizes it has been abandoned, and withdraws. After it departs, Harker’s brigade arrives on the spur and deploys. Fragments of Dick’s brigade also form on the spur. Stanley’s brigade reforms from its fight with Govan, and moves toward the Snodgrass cabin.
To the south, Kershaw’s Brigade attacks Brannan’s scratch position on Horseshoe Ridge. It is not a distinct, coordinated attack, but rather the pursuit of Harker that runs into unexpected opposition. The disordered brigade is easily repulsed.
The 21st Ohio, after marching back and forth on the ridge under fire, takes a position on Hill Three. After the repulse of Kershaw it immediately charges down the hill and counterattacks.
Johnson’s Division advances to the Vittetoe House and the ridge above it. The 26th Ohio and 7th Indiana Battery fall back and leave the field after encountering Johnson’s skirmishers. |
