Concerned with reports of Union cavalry to the south, probably Wilder’s Lightning Brigade, Preston orders Trigg to send a patrol.  Trigg sends the 1st Florida Cavalry (dismounted), the 7th Florida, and one cannon from Peeple’s Battery on a march down the Lafayette Road.  Only Colonel Robert Bullock of the 7th Florida gives an account of how far they travel, stating they march for 1½ miles.  However, this would take them to the vicinity of the Lee and Gordon’s Mill, which is probably much too far.  Regardless, we do not know how far they actually went.
