Confederate Order of Battle
The Campaign
September 18th

By the eve of battle on September 18th more reinforcements had arrived.  Three brigades from Hood’s division of the Army of Northern Virginia arrived by train in Ringold, Georgia.  From Mississippi, another brigade from Walkers’ division and one from French’s division also arrived.  Brigadier General Bushrod Johnson was given command of a provisional division created on the spot from his own brigade (detached from Stewart’s division at the time), the brigades from Walker and French, and a brigade from Hood’s division.  Major General Hood would arrive later in the day and take command of Johnson’s division and his own.

The cavalry had also been reorganized by September 18th.  The cavalry from the former Department of East Tennessee was formed into a division under Brigadier General John Pegram and joined with Forrest’s division to form an additional cavalry corps.  Brigadier General Frank Armstrong took over command of Forrest’s division and Forrest assumed corps command.
