Confederate Order of Battle
The Campaign
September 19th

The structure of the Army of Tennessee remained basically unchanged from the day before.  However, Major General Hood took formal command of Longstreet’s Corps the previous afternoon, which included his own division, and the division under Brigadier General Bushrod Johnson.  Almost every published order of battle for Chickamauga places Johnson’s division under Buckner’s Corps.  This is simply not the case, and originated from the somewhat confusing way the order of battle is presented in the Official Records.  However, when reading the reports of those involved it is quite clear that Johnson’s division was part of Hood’s corps throughout the battle, and was never under the operational control of General Buckner.
Therefore on the first day of the battle Bragg took into action five infantry corps, a battalion of reserve artillery, and two corps of cavalry.
