Union Order of Battle
The Campaign
August 20th, 1863

On August 16th, Major General William Rosecrans ordered the Army of the Cumberland to advance to the Tennessee River, beginning the Chickamauga Campaign.  It took a week to advance the army over the rough roads and terrain to the river, and the Army began crossing the Tennessee on August 29th.

The thirteen infantry division were organized into four corps, the Fourteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-First, and Reserve Corps.  Also present was a brigade of pioneers.  Detatchments to protect the army’s supply lines would weaken this force, and not all of them would cross the Tennessee River for the campaign.

No complete returns for August 20th are in the Official Records.  The returns for the Fourteenth Corps are from August 20th, but only referenced in the August 31st records.  The strengths for the remaining corps are from the August 10th returns.  Interestingly, the August 10th returns do not have a Present for Duty, Equipped column, but they are referred to in the August 31st report.  In addition, there is no Present for Duty, Equipped report for the Cavalry Corps or Pioneer Brigade on August 10th.  The number in red is derived from a formula based on the percentage of PFDE/PFD (95%) in similar dates in August and September.
You will also notice that in some cases the Present for Duty, Equipped column is larger than the Present for Duty column.  That is not a typo.  There is no current explanation other than some irregular counting on the part of the units.

The last report where division strengths for the Department are given is the August 10th report.  Click here for a breakdown of the strength of the Army of the Cumberland by division on August 10th.  Its an interesting comparison to the division strengths on September 19th.
