Union Order of Battle
The Campaign
September 10th, 1863

By September 10th the Federal units that would participate in the Battle of Chickamauga had crossed the Tennessee River and were maneuvering for position.  Most of the Reserve Corps, commanded by Major General Gordon Granger,  had been left in Tennessee stretching from Nashville to the Tennessee, protecting the railroad.  The 1st and 2nd brigades of the 1st Division, and the 2nd brigade of the 2nd Division were all that remained on the field of battle.  The 2nd Division commander was not present, so the 2nd brigade was nominally placed under the command of the 1st Division, though it seemed to have also taken orders directly from General Granger.

The Pioneer brigade was also left behind, and did not take part in the battle. It did, however, arrive in Chattanooga on September 15th, and remained there constructing bridges, repairing sawmills, and improving the fortifications around the city.
