National Colors of the 1st Battalion, 16th United States Infantry
The 16th United States infantry was issued substandard battalion colors early in the war, but chose not to use them.  There is some evidence to suggest that they intsead had to make due with using camp colors in the field as a battalion standard.  This flag was usually 18 inches square and made of bunting, probably wool.  It is also unknown whether any writing was inscribed on the colors.

The 1st Battalion, 16th United States suffered so many casualties on September 19th that its remnant was consolidated with the 1st Battalion, 19th United States for the duration of the battle.  The 80% casualty rate for September 19th represents soldiers that had run away or did not rejoin the regiment before the morning roll call.  The overall casualty rate of the unit for the battle was 63%, so some of the men had to have returned at some point.
