At about 11:00 AM the two divisions under Howard begin their advance. The exact path of their march is unknown. Colonel Knefler describes using the Dallas-Acworth Road as an axis of advance, so the two divisions probably followed the road for some distance, however small. They could just as likely have taken a more circuitous route.
General Cleburne sends word to Govan at about the same time to fall back and return to the division. Major U. M. Laurance of the 107th Illinois reports hearing the bugles of Wood’s division and the Confederates retreating before them. However, it is just as likely that Govan gave the order to retire at roughly the same time. |
