Generals Howard and Wood move forward to investigate.  Travelling southward, they arrive at the southern edge of a large wheatfield.  On the other side they observe the soldiers of Govan’s Brigade busily constructing earthworks.  However, the earthworks are fresh, the Conferates are still working on them, and the high ground of the ravine to the left does not have any trenches.  They have reached the end of the Confederate line.
