6:15 PM

Gibson’s front line assaults Granbury’s position with the same ferocity as Hazen’s men, with identical results.  They probably arrived on the ridge closer to 6:30 than 6:15 as the map indicates.  The second line drifts slightly to the right, with the 15th Ohio out in the open wheat field.  The 15th deploys Company A as skirmishers to the right to try to negate the flanking fire from Govan’s Brigade, and then refuses the entire regiment to the right to protect the rest of the brigade.  When Granbury stops the front line in its tracks, Gibson orders the second line to attack through the first and carry the position.  The 15th Ohio is in the middle of its redeployment when the order comes, and they charge at an odd angle.  The second line’s assault carries them through the head of the ravine, and intense fire forces the 15th Ohio to drop prone before reaching Govan’s position at the edge of the field.

The left wing of Hazen’s brigade begins to fall back from the cornfield.  In truth, they probably fall back closer to the time when the right wing retires.  However, many end up staying at the fence, which further confuses the order of events on this part of the battlefield.  To the south, the 4th Louisiana of Quarles’ Brigade moves forward to fill a gap between the 8th & 19th Arkansas regiment and the 33rd Alabama of Lowrey’s Brigade.  They fire into the Union forces at the top of the ridge, adding to the confusion.

Their left flank clear, the right wing of Scribner’s brigade charges up the ridge adjacent to the Pickett House and finally clears off the skirmishers of Kelly’s Division.

Behind Govan’s Brigade, yet more reinforcements arrive in the form of Walthall’s Brigade from Hindman’s Division.  The Confederates are having no trouble sending reinforcements where they are needed most.  The Union, on the other hand, has only engaged three out of seven brigades present.
