After ninety minutes of intense combat, the right wing of Hazen’s brigade begins to break. In small groups, the men begin to filter back toward their starting point. Recognizing the obvious, General Hazen orders those who are able to retreat. However, many stay behind in the ravine continuing the fight, unwilling or unable to fall back. Ironically, on the way back Hazen and his men encounter the advancing soldiers of Colonel Gibson’s brigade. General Wood finally orders them forward to support Hazen and assault the Confederate line at 6:00 PM, ninety minutes too late.
To the east, Scribner’s three regiments across the creek attack up the slope and drive Hume’s skirmishers from the crest.
At the cornfield, the 6th Indiana and 23rd Kentucky regiments reform along the fence at the north end of the field with the remainder of the left wing. They fire into Lowrey’s advancing men. Lowrey does not press the attack, and his brigade falls back to the south end of the field. Behind them Quarles’ Brigade begins deploying in a supporting line. |
