Knefler’s brigade takes up a position among the remains of Hazen and Gibson’s men. They keep up as much of a volume of fire upon the Confederates as they can. The 17th and 9th Kentucky regiments at the left end of the line receive fire into their left flank from a hill beyond the cornfield. This forces the two regiments to shift the left to present a better frontage to the threat. Otherwise the two lines blaze away at each other in the darkening twilight.
To the north, Hazen and Gibson reform the shattered remnants of their brigades as best they can, and hope more men join them later from those still trapped in the ravine. |
