As the fight in the ravine continues, the 1st and 41st Ohio regiments fight off efforts to outflank them on the right.  Whether this is from skirmishers of the 6th & 7th Arkansas or the entire Confederate regiment is unknown.  However, with McLean’s brigade back in the woods, the Confederates have a free hand with such attempts.  Those Federals still fighting and the wounded in the ravine begin to take whatever shelter they can; behind rock outcroppings, trees, and in the creek bed at the bottom of the slope.

At the cornfield, the 6th Indiana and 23rd Kentucky reach the southern edge of the field, pushing back the stubborn cavalry skirmishers.  They can see the soldier’s of Lowrey’s Brigade marching past them in the darkening woods.  The 5th Kentucky stops in the wooded ravine in the middle of the field, probably in response to the growing Confederate presence in the woods to the right.  The concern is justified when the 8th & 19th Arkansas charges into the flank of the Union regiments.  The 5th and 6th Kentucky regiments fall back to the ridge.  Behind the Arkansans, Lowrey’s regiments deploy into line of battle as soon as they clear one another on the march.

In response to the fire from Hume’s skirmishers east of the creek, Colonel Scribner sends three regiments across to gain the high ground and drive them away.  Otherwise, he stalls and makes no further attempt to help Hazen’s attack, being held back by a mere skirmish line.
