Lowrey’s Brigade finishes deploying in front of the 6th Indiana and 23rd Kentucky and attacks. The two Union regiments, finding the regiments behind them gone and the enemy in front of them in overwhelming force, make a mad dash back to the fence at the north end of the field.
The 8th & 19th Arkansas pulls back and links up with the right of Granbury’s Brigade. More help is also on the way for the Confederates. General Hood has sent Brigadier General William Quarles’ Brigade to help. This brigade has just joined the army from the Gulf Coast and hasn’t been assigned to a division. Using the trails cut by Cleburne’s pioneers, as did Lowrey’s men, it quickly marches toward the threatened right flank.
To the north, McLean abandons any pretense of supporting the attack and pulls back further from the action. Across the creek, Scribner’s three regiments continue deploying for their attack. |
